The first pass after the turnover
Watch a team lose the ball in the opponent's half. The immediate question is not how fast they run back. It is who covers the central lane first.
In many Serie A matches this season, the defensive midfielder drops between the centre-backs, but the two full-backs stay high. That leaves the half-space open for one simple pass. The opposition winger receives, turns, and suddenly the back four is facing its own goal.
It is not a physical problem. It is a positioning problem. One player delays the ball carrier. Another covers the pass into the gap. The rest recover into shape. If nobody takes that central lane, the transition becomes a shooting chance.
The best defensive transition starts before the ball is lost, with the players already standing in the right lanes.
Question: When your team loses the ball, which player is responsible for closing the middle first?
