The Substitution That Removed a Passing Lane
Lazio's first half against Milan at the Olimpico exposed a simple problem. Modric dropped to receive, but the Lazio midfield blocked the vertical lane into him. He turned sideways. The ball went back.
When Musah replaced him at half-time, the lane changed. Musah did not ask for the ball at his feet. He ran beyond the Lazio midfield line. That pulled a defender, and suddenly Pulisic and Moreira had room to attack the space behind the full-backs.
Two goals in two minutes came from that shift. Not from a speech. From a player moving into a different zone.
Watch who receives between the lines, not who has the ball.
Question: When a midfielder drops deep but cannot turn, is the problem the player or the lane he is standing in?
