The Half-Space Runner

In the Champions League final, Arsenal's opening goal came from a detail many missed. Kai Havertz dropped into midfield, pulling Marquinhos out of the back line. Then he ran into the space behind.

The key was the half-space between Paris' left centre-back and left-back. When Havertz dropped, that gap opened. When he turned, nobody covered the runner. One pass, one finish.

Watch the first ten minutes for this pattern. Does the striker drop or stay high? Who follows him? If the centre-back steps out and the full-back stays wide, the space behind is already there. That tells you more than any possession number.

Look at the space between the units, not the ball.

Question: When a striker drops into midfield, should the centre-back follow him or hold the line?
