The Full-Back’s First Step

Watch a full-back in the opening minutes. If he steps high and wide to receive the ball, look at who is covering the space behind him. In a recent match, I noticed a full-back pushing forward before the centre-back had recovered. The winger didn't track. One pass into that channel and the defence is stretched.

The team shape tells you where the risk sits. If the covering midfielder is slow to drop, that space becomes a repeat problem. It is not about one dangerous attack. It is about a pattern that the opposition will test.

The first ten minutes expose where the full-back is standing and who is ready to cover.

Question: When you watch a team build from the back, where do you look first to see if their structure is solid?
