The first ten minutes of Torino-Milan
The new Serie A season kicks off this weekend, and Milan's trip to Torino on Sunday evening is the one that catches my eye -5.
Opening matches are often about discovering what the new shape looks like. I will be watching the distance between Milan's midfield and attack. If it stretches beyond 25 metres, Torino's midfield will find pockets to receive between the lines.
Leao's starting position will be the first clue. If he stays wide and high, the space for Theo Hernandez to overlap is there. But I am more interested in the full-back behind him. Who covers the space if Theo goes forward? That is where the first dangerous counter often starts.
The first ten minutes usually expose a bad pre-match assumption.
Question: With a new season and new tactical adjustments, what is the first structural detail you will look for in your team's opening match?
