The Full-Back Trigger
Watching the first ten minutes of a match usually shows you the real defensive shape, not the one on the team sheet. Against a side that builds from the back, watch where the opposition full-backs stand when their goalkeeper has the ball.
If both full-backs push high and wide, the central defenders are isolated. The space appears between the centre-back and the full-back, not in the middle. A well-organized press will angle its front three to cut that passing lane, forcing the centre-back inside where the cover is tighter.
The consequence is simple: the goalkeeper goes long, and the team loses possession in a dangerous area. If the full-backs drop deeper to offer the pass, the press has already done its job by pushing the opposition back.
Watch the full-backs in the first phase. Their position tells you where the space is and who is really controlling the build-up.
Question: Which team do you think adjusts its full-back positioning better when pressed high?
