The space between the lines

Watch the first ten minutes of Milan vs. Torino this Saturday. I am looking at the distance between Milan's midfield and attack, especially when they build from the back.

Torino will likely defend with a compact block, so the key question is whether Milan's central midfielders can find pockets between Torino's lines. If the full-backs push high and the wingers stay wide, that central space can open for runners. But if Torino's midfield drops to cover, the passing lane disappears and Milan will have to go wide.

The half-space is where this match will be decided. Milan need someone to drift inside and receive between the lines, pulling the defence out of shape. If they get that right, the chances will come. If not, it will be a long afternoon of sideways passes.

First ten minutes will tell you if the shape is working or if they are just going through the motions.
