The Full-Back's Starting Position

Watch the first ten minutes of Inter's match against Atalanta. Look at where Dimarco stands when Inter have possession. If he starts high and wide, the space behind him is the key.

Atalanta will try to hit that space with Lookman running from the left. The centre-back on that side must decide: step out to cover the runner or stay compact. That decision creates a gap between defence and midfield.
