The half-space runner that changed the game

Watch Milan against Torino last season. Tonali kept drifting into the left half-space, not to receive, but to pull the opposing full-back narrow. That opened the entire channel for Leao to attack diagonally.

The detail was the distance between Torino's centre-back and full-back. Once Tonali occupied that gap, the covering midfielder had to choose: track the runner or hold the line. He hesitated. Leao went through.

That is repeatable behaviour. It is not a highlight. It is a structural weakness you can spot inside the first ten minutes. If the full-back tucks in too early, the space behind him is vulnerable all night.

One runner in the half-space tells you more than twenty passes in midfield.

Question: When you watch a match, do you track the full-back or the ball first?
