The First Attack Tells You More Than Ten Minutes of Possession
Watch a team's first attacking move without the ball. Not the pass, the position. Where is the central midfielder when the keeper has it? How deep are the full-backs?
A pass goes astray. Most call it a bad touch. I call it a disconnected shape. If the midfielder is too deep and the full-back is too high, the vertical distance between units is wrong. That pass was never on. The space is not where they think it is.
Betting lesson: wait for that structural read before committing. Give the match three minutes to show you the real shape. If the full-back is leaving space behind or the striker is isolated, adjust your read. The price is part of the decision, but the shape tells you if the price is wrong.
Keep the first ten minutes as a test, not a trigger.
Question: When was the last time you changed your pre-match read after watching the opening shape?
